Just a Couple of Things...

4/30/2012

Happy Monday! I had just a few things I wanted to share...

*** Next year there will be an addition to the Willard School Supply List. ALL students at East will need to bring a set of headphones / earbuds to leave at school.  While standing in line at Walgreens over the weekend I actually saw some there for $5 and I thought I would pass this information on now so you would have plenty of time to find some for your child (children).

*** Also... Friday's Costume for Community will be Hawaiian themed! Don't forget to send $1.00 to help support Project Graduation!

Thank you!

Writing Assessment

4/23/2012

Next week, every student at every Willard elementary school will take a common writing assessment. We have prepared for this the entire year and my students are very familiar with the process. I shared the rubric with many of you at parent information night - but let's face it - that was a LONG time ago! I just thought I would take a minute and re-share the expectations with you.

A couple of first grade teachers made a "child friendly" rubric that we often share with the students instead of this one. It has the same content on it, just in more child friendly terms.

Here is a peak at the amazing things that your students have been doing!
Student practiced writing with voice by making Thumbprint Animal Stories. We worked on this with Miss Burrell for several days but they turned out GREAT!!
We also have been learning about OVIPAROUS animals. Ask your child to name a few animals that come from eggs!
In celebration of Earth Day we learned how we could take care of the Earth and made Earth Day Promises! We also practiced adding and subtracting 10s from any number. We got some extra practice by using these nifty number finders (inspired by my pinterest obsession)
And finally, a few things from last week that I don't think I ever got posted...
We finished learning about bats and wrote some "fantastic" poems about Fantastic Caverns!

MISS BURRELL’S LAST DAY
Can you believe Miss Burrell has already been with us for four weeks!?!? Thursday will be her last day of student teaching. She has done a fantastic job in our classroom and has implemented some very creative  lessons! Please feel welcome to send a card on Thursday from your child and / or family.

SPECIAL CLASS SCHEDULE AND MAP
Just a reminder that on MAP Testing Days (Wednesday and Thursday), we will switch our special class time with the third grade classes. This means that our special classes will start at 8:45 instead of 1:00. We do this so the third graders have a larger amount of uninterrupted time to complete the testing.

SPELLING WORDS
sick, trick, brick, duck, truck, slicker
****  Correction: the newsletter lists brink as a spelling word instead of brick. The words above are correct.
We will not take our spelling test until Friday, April 13th. This should give every student able time to study and score 100%.

FIELD TRIP REMINDERS
*Please dress your child in his or her blue school shirt. This will help others identify the students in our group.
* Remember to send your child’s lunch in a disposable bag / containers, labeled with his or her name.
* If you are attending the field trip, you are welcome to meet us at Fantastic Caverns a few minutes before 10:00 OR you can follow the bus. We will leave at 9:30 from school.
* The cave temperature is right at 60 degrees. Your child will most likely want a light weight jacket or sweatshirt to wear in the cave, even if it is warm outside.

NO SCHOOL
Don’t forget… school will not be in session on Friday, April 6th or Monday, April 9th!

SPECIAL CLASS SCHEDULE AND MAP
On MAP Testing Days, we will switch our special class time with the third grade classes. This means that our special classes will start at 8:45 instead of 1:00. We do this so the third graders have a larger amount of uninterrupted time to complete the testing.

ASK YOUR CHILD ABOUT...
Stalactites and stalagmites, types of caves,  thumbprint stories, using voice in writing, finger knitting in art, and using dialogue in writting.
