HAPPY VETERAN'S DAY

11/11/2016

First things first, I want to take a moment and say thank you to all of our veterans. Both of my grandfathers served in the military, and while they are no longer alive, I still take a moment every year to express my appreciation to them, and all of the other people who make so many sacrifices for our country.

It was such a short, but busy week! We wrapped up our Topic 3 math unit on Tuesday and took our assessment on Wednesday. Seven students scored 100% on the assessment and quite a few other students missed only one or two questions. GREAT JOB!!!
We also started researching Native Americans this week. This is one of my absolute favorite units of the school year. The students are so curious and engaged!
I want to take a minute and tell you about an amazing app that we used this week. It is called Google Expeditions and it is an incredible way to to experience virtual field trips! You can visit the moon, coral reefs, The Great Wall of China, even the surface of Mars. Talk about AMAZING! It is completely free but does require a device.
We used Google Expeditions to learn about and even tour a tipi today before writing about housing in our Native American non-fiction books.

ABSENT FRIDAY
Several teachers from East are going to visit a school in the KC area on Friday. I will be going with the group so we will have a substitute in our classroom on the 18th. Please call the office if your child will be going home a way other than he or she usually does.

TURKEY PROJECT
Your child is welcome to still turn in his or her turkey project next Monday if they have not brought it to school yet!

PUMPKIN CHUNKIN' TIME

11/2/2016

Wow! We had SO much fun on Monday during our Pumpkin Chunkin' STEM project! I had not does this particular STEM project with first graders before so I was a little nervous that it might flop. Not only did it NOT flop, it was a huge success! The students worked so incredibly hard together and we had some amazing pumpkin catapults designed in Room 203.
Each group was given:

* 1 small dixie cup
* 3 craft sticks
* 2 toothpicks
* 1 plastic spoon
* 1 rubber band
* 24 inches of masking tape
* 1 wooden clothespin
* 1 small, fluffy, orange, craft pom pom / "pumpkin"

The students first task was to plan their catapult and write about it in detail. Then, they worked together to build it and make any changes they thought necessary. Next, they drew a picture of their design.

When all of the teams were finished, we launched. After each team had down their initial launch, they were allowed to go back and make any additional changes that they wanted to make before our second launch. We even had to change the location of our launch to allow for more space! We had a fantastic time with this STEM project!

Non-Fiction Writing

 We have been working so hard on non-fiction pieces the past couple of weeks. I have to say, I don't think I have ever had a class that was so incredibly excited to research and write non-fiction teaching books. Makes my teacher heart SO HAPPY!!! Students have been picking Work on Writing multiple times a day during Daily 5 so they can WRITE NON-FICTION BOOKS!!!
We have been using Pebble Go a lot to research. Did you know that you can use Pebble Go at home for free?

This is a super safe way to let your child explore various topics. They can listen to the text read to them and even watch short video clips that go with the information.
