PICK A PUMPKIN

Picture
We started two weeks of close reading about pumpkins. We have searching for good information, taking a lot of notes, and even writing a non-fiction chapter book about pumpkins! Yep! You read that right... my first graders are becoming AMAZING authors!!! They have even been searching for pictures in computer lab to use in their books. I cannot wait to see the finished products!
We read some great non-fiction books about pumpkins this week and focused on learning about the life cycle of a pumpkin and what this fruit needs to grow!

Don’t forget that parent-teacher conferences are next Tuesday and Thursday! The grade card looks VERY different than it has in years past and I think you will like it after adjusting to the changes. Please remember our conference will only be 15 minutes. If you still have questions at the end of our scheduled time I would be happy to set up an additional time to meet with you!

FALL PARTY
Our fall party will be on Thursday, October 31 at 2:30.  Please remember that this is a fall party and not a Halloween party.

At the end of those five weeks she will return to our room for her two final weeks of student teaching before graduating from Missouri State! We will really miss her while she is gone but are excited for her as she completes this learning opportunity.

A new sight word list is coming home with your child today. The words are also attached below in case you need an additional copy. I will begin assessing these words in just a few short weeks. Please practice these words with your student to help insure that he or she can recognize them quickly and consistently.

We had another great week in Room 203! We have switched gears a little in math and have started working on subtraction strategies. We will continue to work on both addition and subtraction fluency through the remainder of the year. Next week will start working on place value during our math block. In reading and writing we will continue our non-fiction focus. We are getting ready to start a unit where each child will actually write a non-fiction chapter book! We will spend a lot of time working together on this project and I cannot wait for you to see the end result. Next week we will start learning about community helpers and maps!

APPLE OVERLOAD!

10/4/2013

Picture
We wrapped up our apple experiment on Monday. I must say, the students LOVED this project and learned so much from it. However, I was not too sad when I said goodbye to these moldy little guys on Monday night after Open House! Speaking of Open House... I hope you enjoyed coming and checking out our classroom! You are always welcome to peek in if you are here - but it is nice to have a little time set aside to see what we have been working so hard on!

We really have been digging deep into some great non-fiction books to learn about apples, their life cycles, and interesting uses for the fruit. As part of our non-fiction focus in writing we have been learning the difference between facts and opinions. This can be an incredibly difficult concept for young learners so we got some practice in by sorting statements about apples.

I am usually at school by 7:20 AM. If you have not scheduled your conference, please email me so we can set up a time.
