eBook Project with Mrs. Whisler

This is a project that our class did with Mrs. Whisler last week. It took us a few tries to get it right and ready to share - but I THINK all of the kinks are worked out now! You can click on the icon below or you can use click here!

I have to reserve the seats as other classes from our school and other elementary schools will also be attending. We will leave the school at 9:00 AM and return by 10:30 AM.

Inside our week...

Picture
This week we started talking about how writers use their voice in writing. We read some great books that demonstrate amazing voice. The class favorite was probably Diary of a Worm! I have to admit, it is a pretty funny book and a great example of using voice in writing. We practiced writing with good voice this week too. We brainstormed ideas about a time when we got hurt and then we used our ideas to write these All Patched Up narratives. I started thinking back to August and I got goosebumps reflecting on how much growth has taken place in writing this year. Isn't it amazing?!?! I must say, it is one of my favorite things about teaching first grade.  We will continue learning about voice next week with some more fantastic books and writing pieces!

We also learned about bears this week. We talked about several different types but focused mostly on grizzly bears and black bears. We checked out some pretty fascinating books and also utilized Pebble Go during class and computer lab to help us with our research. We took notes about interesting and important bear facts and then we used them to help us write this little bear report. And what is a report without a cute craft to hang with it in the hallway?!?!
Ask your child about… bears, narrative writing, subtraction fluency, typing stories in the computer lab, using voice in writing, and Fantastic Caverns!

As many of you know - I was having a difficult time posting to my blog so this information will be a little outdated!
FIELD TRIP
I was so very impressed with everyone's behavior today at Fantastic Caverns! We had a great time and learned a lot too! The underground classroom was amazing and we loved digging for fossils. I promise to post some pictures just as soon as I can get them uploaded!

GOOD-BYE MRS. WHISLER
We have truly loved having Mrs. Whisler in our classroom since we returned from winter break! For the next five weeks Mrs. Whisler will be student teaching in 3rd grade.
When she finishes in that classroom, she will return to us for 1-2 weeks. She has accepted a long-term sub job for a kindergarten class in another building, so it will depend a little on when that teacher has her baby. Mrs. Whisler has done an INCREDIBLE job and we could not have wished for a better student teacher. We will really miss having her in our classroom!

ASK YOUR CHILD ABOUT…
Bats, caves, writing opinion pieces, special guests observing in our classroom, the bounce houses, and counting by 2 &5.

FIELD TRIP
Your child brought home a permission slip to go on the first grade field trip today! We will be traveling to Fantastic Caverns on Tuesday, March 26th. Cost is $8.00 (cash only, please) for students and is due with the signed permission slip by Wednesday, March 20th.

END OF QUARTER
Can you believe that the end of 3rd quarter is already here?!?!? Grade cards will come home during the week we return from Spring Break!

SNOW DAY MAKE UP
The district make up days will be Thursday, May 23 and Friday, May 24th.

ASK YOUR CHILD ABOUT…
Nouns, verbs, adjectives, subtraction story problems, the Book Fair, our guest speaker from the zoo, and what we learned about owls!

Picture
This week we learned about owls. We read several great non-fiction books and gathered as much information as possible on these birds.

Picture
We also had a special guest from the zoo come and visit. She brought us three different types of owls to check out!

Picture
We worked hard on opinion writing this week by writing a review of a book that we like! Then, we used a nifty app called Croak.it! to record our book review. This app lets you share up to 30 seconds of recorded audio through an emailed link. I used the link and converted them to QRs. These were posted in our hallway during Family Reading Night. When you scan the code (you need to have a QR scanner app for this to work) it will play the recorded book review!

We wrapped up the week by celebrating the birthday of Dr. Seuss (yes, a little late). We made Seuss Juice and investigated the drink using our five senses. We also made friends with some pre-K kids from Tiger Cubs Preschool. Mrs. Beth brought her morning class over to read with our kids in honor of Read Across America Day. They had planned on coming last Friday but the snowy weather caused us to change to this week instead. We had a great week and it was the perfect way to wrap up third quarter - just in time for SPRING BREAK!!!

FAMILY READING NIGHT
We hope to see you at Family Reading Night on March 5th! The fun will begin at 6:30 PM.

BOOK FAIR INFORMATION
Don’t forget that the Book Fair will be open all next week! 1st grade students will be able to attend the book fair after school with a parent, during Family Reading Night, and our entire class will go during our regular scheduled library time (Wednesday at 2:00).

BOOK CHARACTER DAY
Friday, March 8th is an early out day AND it is Book Character Day! Students are encouraged to bring $1.00 and dress as a book character that they love!

READ-A-THON
Don’t forget to encourage your child to read every night for our Read-a-thon! Every first grader needs to log 250 minutes of reading time! Also, remember to collect pledges and one time donations to help raise money for our school!

ASK YOUR CHILD ABOUT… parts of an insect, compound eyes, sentence fluency, and writing book recommendations! It has been a BUSY week!

Congratulations to Coach J and the Willard Boy’s Basketball team for winning Districts! They will play in sectionals on Wednesday at SBU (6:00PM) Let's show our support for our favorite P.E. teacher and our Willard Tigers!

Spring picture day is TUESDAY! An order form will come home today!

BEFORE FAMILY READING NIGHT
I encourage you to download a QR Reader to your smartphone if you have one. You can also download these to an iPod touch or iPad. Our students have been working very hard on some incredible book reviews with Mrs. Whisler but you will need a QR Reader to check them out. There are several free versions available for many types of devices (not just Apple - that is just what I am most familiar with!) This looks similar to a barcode scanner and you can see a sample icon below.
