PASSION PROJECTS ARE IN FULL SWING!

3/30/2017

We kicked off our Genius Hour / Passion Projects two weeks ago and they are now in full swing. I love these projects because it totally allows your child to learn and explore a topic that he or she is interested in. Some of the things that my students are learning about are volcanoes, dinosaurs, ocean life, the tropical rain forest, Egyptian pyramids, and the Titanic. We have partnered with Mrs. Waddell's first grade class for our projects. We work on our projects on Tuesdays and Thursdays from 12:35-1:00 for four weeks total. When we finish our projects, Mrs. Smith's and Mrs. Lopez's classes will also have the same opportunities.  Students are divided into very small groups and work with Mrs. Waddell, Mrs. McGuire, Mrs. Hillenburg, Mrs. Coffey, Mrs. Peper, Ms. Mathers, and myself. This allows each group to have 4-6 students, which allows for lots of hands on exploration time! Be sure to ask your student about their project!
Below are a few picture from  my Titanic group (learning about the effect of salt water on Titanic artifacts) and Mrs. Hillenburg's dinosaur group.
MATH TEST FRIDAY
Our next math test will be on Friday. I made another study guide that will come home next week. I accidentally put that the test is on Thursday at the top of the study guide but it will actually be on FRIDAY. The study guide is once again not required but it is extremely close to the actual test, so it should be very helpful.
This test will cover subtraction strategies.

 ART REQUEST
The student will be working with clay on Tuesday during art. Ms. Mathers has                       requested that students wear short sleeves if possible. If your student happens to forget, we will roll up his or her sleeves.

 STEM PROJECT NEED
Thank you to the families that have donated Playdough for our STEM project with Mrs. Lines 2nd grade class. We are still needing a couple more containers.

FIELD DAY SHIRT ORDERS
Field Day shirt orders and money are due by April 12. Field Day is scheduled for May 11th. More details will be sent home closer to the event.

HAVE A GREAT SPRING BREAK!!!

3/10/2017

I wanted to take a minute and share this picture in case you don't follow our class Instagram (_1st_things_1st). Look at those ADORABLE faces!!!!! SOOOO CUTE! Sadly we were missing one student on picture day but this was so cute so I wanted to share!
Picture
This week we continued learning about the weather. We read Cloudy With a Chance of Meatballs and did a fun writing extension to go along with it. Most of the kids have seen the movie but very few knew that it was actually a book long before a movie. It is such a creative and descriptive book!
We also spent some time reading some of my absolute favorite books as we prepare to launch Genius Hour. If you aren't familiar with Genius Hour you should click HERE to watch a very short little introductory video.
I LOVE Genius Hour because it lets the students have a little control over what they are learning about. We are doing a slightly different version in first grade this year. Students were given 6 topics to pick from. After we return from Spring Break we will be dividing up into small groups to research our topics. After four weeks of learning each group will teach the rest of the students about their topic. We will be partnering with Mrs. Waddell's class for Genius Hour. Students will find out which topic they will be researching after we return from Spring Break.
I have to take a minute and thank Mrs. Hillenburg, Mrs. Coffey, and Mrs. McGuire. Each of these ladies will be helping us with our research and projects.
MRS. KRAMER ABSENT
I am fortunate to serve on the Leadership Team for Willard East. I will be at a Leadership meeting on Tuesday, March 21st. Ms. Peper and a substitute will both be in the classroom.

CIRCUS TIME!!!
We have been counting down the days (literally) until we get to go to the circus. We are so excited for this amazing opportunity! PLEASE have your student wear his or her Friday shirt on the 24th for our field trip.
The bus will be leaving Willard East at 9:15. You will probably want to meet us at the school and follow us to JQH.

SPRING CONFERENCES
I will be offering spring parent teacher conferences the week of March 27-March 30 for anyone that would like to meet. School will NOT be in session March 31.
You can sign up by going to

***Please note, you will most likely want to view and edit the spreadsheet on a computer rather than a phone or tablet. If you would like a conference and need help signing up for a time please email or call me. I would be happy to help!

HIGH SCHOOL PLAY
We will be walking to WHS for a play called Colors on March 30th. Please make sure your student is wearing tennis shoes on this day.

PROGRESS REPORTS
Progress reports will be emailed to all parents on March 27th. Please feel free to contact me with any questions or concerns!

MATH PRACTICE
Math this week was super challenging! The optional packet that I sent home earlier in the week is a great review for these difficult math concepts. Our Topic 10 math test will be Thursday after Spring Break!

HAPPY BIRTHDAY DR. SEUSS

3/3/2017

Dr. Seuss would have turned 113 this week and we had a great time celebrating! We read so many of his books (he wrote and illustrated over 40 books!) We also practiced our listening by completing an adorable Cat in the Hat directed drawing. We also continued to work on opinion writing by writing book reviews about our favorite Dr. Seuss books.
We wrapped up the week by making "Seuss Juice" so be sure to ask your student if they liked the tasty treat! (You know... for a little more opinion practice!)

2 DIGIT ADDITION WITH REGROUPING
We started our Topic 10 math unit this week. This unit will be our most difficult unit yet! One concept that we will be working on is 2 digit addition WITH regrouping. In past years this has been very challenging for some first graders. It will be after spring break (this unit is longer) before we get to that point, but I wanted to give you a heads because I know that students may want to practice at home as well.
