ALL ABOUT APPLES!

9/23/2016

This week we learned SO many cool things about apples! Did you know that there are more than 2,000 different types of apples?!?!
We had so much fun making applesauce on Tuesday and (almost) everyone loved eating it too. I have to be honest, it is SO easy and SO delicious that my family usually makes it at home at least once a year. The students even wrote their own versions of the recipe on Friday. We also did an apple cider taste test to wrap up our apple explorations.
In math we are working hard on our addition strategies. This week we spent some time counting on, working on our doubles fluency, and learning how doubles +or- 1 can help us solve equations easily.

WEEKLY NEWS!

SCHOOL PICTURE DAY
Don’t forget that school picture day is on September 27!!! An order form came home with your student this week.

OPEN HOUSE
I would love to see you at our Willard East Open House on Thursday, October 6th. This will be a come and go event and a great opportunity to see everything that your child has been working on in first grade! The fall Parent / Teacher Conference sign up sheet will be available in my classroom and our Instructional Coach, Cassi Harper, will be in the  computer lab to help you with any Mastery Connect questions or concerns.

BOOK FAIR

The Book Fair will be open September 30-October 7th! It will also be open from 5:30-7:00 PM during Open House. If your child goes in the morning, they need to come check in at the classroom first. I HIGHLY encourage them to wait  until Friday to shop (other than with you at Open House or before / after school) because that is when we will go as a class, during our regular scheduled library time.

BIG "NEWS" (as in FOX 5)

WOW!!! I was so impressed when I graded the math tests this week! This concept started out so challenging for almost ALL of the first graders.  The students worked hard and gave it their all and WOW - they did FANTASTIC!!! We started Topic 2 this week and will spend the next few weeks focusing on addition and subtraction strategies.
Thursday was also International Dot Day - a day dedicated to the book The Dot, by Peter Reynolds. This is a SUPER cute book about a girl who is inspired by a teacher. The girl goes on to inspire another child. It has a great lesson about making your mark on the world. We celebrated by decorating our own dot and bringing them to life through an amazing app called Quiver.

BIG "NEWS"
KRBK / FOX 5 will be in our classroom next TUESDAY! I am not sure when the piece will air but I will do my best to keep you informed.

READING LOGS
Your child should have brought home a reading log in their backpack today! When your child reads 10 books please have them return the completed log with your  signature. I would love to see every child return at least one log per month! Once a month, your child can earn a free  personal pan pizza from Pizza Hut for brining back a completed log.
Also, when your child reaches 200 books total, I will buy them pizza for lunch!
Your child will be responsible for getting a new log when they turn one in BUT if you do not have a log to write it on—it is completely okay! You can email me the books, write them on any paper—I have even had logs turned in written on napkins before! I am not picky! The only thing I ask is that it is in increments of 10.
The important part is that they are reading (or listening) to books!
***If you are reading a chapter book, please count each chapter as a separate book on the log.

 DOUBLE TROUBLE
Your child is also bringing home a packet of math pages. These are NOT required  homework!!! It is just for their own independent practice.
Friday, September 30th I will give a DOUBLES addition timed math test. If your child scores a 90% or higher on the timed test they will receive DoubleMint gum! They will have 2 minutes to complete the 16 problem assessment.

SCHOOL PICTURE DAY
Don’t forget that school picture day is on September 27!!! Watch for order information to come home soon.

This week we spent some time during social studies learning about some different careers! We also had two very special guests! Mrs. Reynolds (Jaxon's mom) came and talked about nursing with the first grade classes. Mrs. Smith's husband also came and brought some friends from TransLand to talk to us about how important trucks are in delivering goods across the country. They even brought a very special pink semi truck that we got to tour!

CLASSROOM NEED: APPLES!!!
For the next couple of weeks we will be learning about apples! The first grade classes will be doing some awesome activities and experiments will apples but we are in need of quite a few  apples for these activities.
Can you help? I made a Google Spreadsheet to help get us started. If you are able to help, please sign up in one of the spots.
You can find the spreadsheet at: goo.gl/3jZXmE
***NOTE*** It is usually easier to fill out the spreadsheet / add your name to a slot from a computer or by using the Google Drive app on your device.
Apple Donations can be sent to school anytime before Thursday. THANK YOU!

WELCOME MRS. PEPPER
For the next few months we will be sharing our mornings with Mrs. Amanda Peper! She is a practicum student from Evangel that will be learning with us on Monday and Wednesday mornings from 9:00-10:30.  Mrs. Peper did another practicum in my classroom last year so I already know how incredibly blessed we are to share this time with her.  She is AMAZING and I am confident that the students are going to love her!

A SHORT (and fast) WEEK

WOW! What a busy week we had in Room 203! We have been working SO hard during our math time and really starting to master these missing addend addition problems. I could not be more impressed! My friends are coming up with amazing strategies and really using their brains to figure out some tough math problems!
This week we continued to write "Small Moment" stories during Writer's Workshop. I LOVE reading the stories that your kids write about things that they have done, places they have been, and the funny things that have happened to them. I must say, this is one of my favorite parts of my job.

We also worked on launching the third component of Daily 5, which is Read to Someone. We practiced a lot and are super excited to have this as an option beginning next week.

WEEKLY NEWS

NO SCHOOL FRIDAY OR MONDAY!

FUNDRAISER PACKETS DUE!
Please do not forget to send your child’s fundraising packet and all money on Tuesday! I will make sure that they check their  backpacks—I know they probably will not fit in their black folders.

ABSENT THURSDAY
Just a reminder… I will be  in a meeting all day on Thursday.  You will need to call the office or send a note if your child is going home a way other than he or she usually does.

SHOEBOX LID FOR ART
Ms. Mathers has asked that every 1st grade child bring a shoebox lid (or any other type of lid approximately the same size) for an art    project they will be doing.
Please label the inside of the lid with your student’s name and our class code (1-K).
Thank you!
