Thanksgiving Fun

Wow! This week just flew by! We have been learning SO much about the first Thanksgiving, life as a pilgrim, and the voyage that was made on the Mayflower! At first we thought it might be pretty neat to be on that ship, but after digging deeper we decided that trip was pretty tough! We were also amazed to learn that there were only seven houses originally built for all of the pilgrims on Plymouth Plantation!

On Tuesday, we welcomed a very special guest, Mr. Tallbird, to our school. Mr. Tallbird shared many interesting stories and artifacts and helped us gain a better understanding about how life has changed for Native Americans over the years. We also learned about the importance of the buffalo to many tribes. Did you know that the buffalo bladder was used as the first thermos?!?!? Ask your child to share some other interesting things that he or she learned from Mr. Tallbird!

WINTER PARTY
Don't forget that our winter party will be on Thursday, December 19th at 8:45 AM.
We are still needing several food items for the party. You can click {HERE} to sign up for an item to bring. Watch for more information to come in the near future.

SPELLING WORDS

BOOK ORDER
A book order came home today. All orders are due by Tuesday, December 3. Please remember that you may use credit card or check (made to Scholastic) to pay. I would be happy to hold items for you and arrange pick up if you decide to purchase anything as a gift!

RECESS ATTIRE
Please help your child remember to bring a warm coat, gloves, hats, etc. for recess. We go outside until the temperature drops to freezing! Students are not allowed to stay inside unless they have a note from the doctor so it is very important that children have proper clothes to keep them warm!

HUGS TREE
The HUGS Tree is set up in the lobby at Willard East and is ready to accept donations of hats, underwear, gloves, and socks for children in need.

TENNIS SHOES
Please help your child remember to wear (or bring) tennis shoes on Mondays and Wednesdays for P.E.
Students are also encouraged to bring a water bottle to P.E. for “Workout Monday.”

First, I would like to apologize! I didn't realize until today that my blog post from last week was never published!
We have had an incredibly busy week this week. We started our Native American unit of study, we learned all about verbs and we also practiced composing 2D shapes. On Tuesday we had a visitor from Willard North observe in our classroom. Next week we will have a special guest each day in our classroom during Tiger Time to watch us do PALs (Peer Assisted Learning Strategies).

UPCOMING UNIT—CAN YOU HELP?
Starting the Monday after Thanksgiving, the first grade students will start an economics unit. Students will earn tickets for good choices and pay fines (tickets) for poor choices. At the end of the unit, which will be right before winter break, each first grade class will have a class store. The first grade   classes are now collecting items for the store.  We are in need of things such as: boxes of crayons, markers, colored pencils, play dough, gel pens, sheets of stickers, bubbles, notepads, erasers, folders, small toys, etc.  Donations will be expected starting next week all the way through December 13th.  Please let me know if you would like more information on this need. We had such a busy week! For the last two weeks we have been working incredibly hard on an informational chapter book about pumpkins. We have learned SO many interesting facts. Did you know that about 90% of every pumpkin is water? My students were also amazed to find out that the largest pumpkin on record is over 2,000 pounds!!!
The students had a great time at our fall party on Thursday. A HUGE thanks to Erin Kane for organizing the event and also to all of the family members to who donated items and helped out during the party. It would not have been possible without your support.
