COME SKATE WITH ME!
We will hold our first skateparty of the year on TUESDAY, October 2nd from 6-8PM. PLEASE NOTE: this will be at the skating rink on S. Campbell (Skateland). Admission is $4 and Willard East will receive $1 from each paid admission.

1/2 DAY FOR STUDENTS
Mark your calendars now! Friday, October 12th will be a 1/2 day for Students. School will dismiss at 12:30.

PARENT TEACHER CONFERENCES
If you have not signed up for your parent-teacher conference, please contact me. I have several times on October 18th available. You can email me at rkramer@willard.k12.mo.us

LOOKING FOR A WAY TO HELP YOUR LEARNER?
You and your child can access a library of books on his or her level online! Check out this site:
www.raz-kids.com/  When it asks for the teacher name use: willardeast1a
Then, then look for your child’s name and icon.  Your child can read books or have books read to them! Then, they can take a short quiz over the book. Every activity they do earns them points that they can use to “buy” things for their spaceship.

Ask your student about… our apple experiment,  Johnny Appleseed, trying apple cider, Tiger Pride Assembly and narrative writing (best day and worst day at school)!

APPLES and HABITATS

9/21/2012

This week we wrapped up a two week study of habitats and we started a two week apple unit! Students learned about wetlands, rain forests, deserts, ocean, and the forest. We talked about the conditions of each habitat as well as the animals and plants that live there. We utilized a great new (to our school) internet resource called Pebble Go! We also used a variety of library books and other websites to research. We finished our study by working in teams to make habitat posters.  {Check out some pictures below!}
Picture
We started off the week by completing the first two steps of a K-W-L chart. The "K" stands for what we already know about apples and the "W" stands for what we want to know about apples. This will help guide the rest of our apple unit as we go into next week.  We also read one of my favorite apple books, What's So Terrible About Swallowing an Apple Seed by Harriet Lerner and Susan Goldhor. In the book, Rosie accidentally swallows an apple seed and her older sister, Katie, warns her that an apple tree will soon grow inside of her stomach. Rosie begins to worry about all of the things she won't be able to do because of the branches that will grow out of her ears. There is a great place in the book to stop and let students predict what problems Rosie may encounter. The students enjoyed the book and came up with some very creative problems!

Next week we will watch as apples decompose (don't worry, I am sure I'll have plenty of pictures to share!) We will make note of how our apples change over time by exploring with our senses. And next week we will complete the "L" portion of our K-W-L chart by sharing what we have learned about apples!
SPELLING WORDS

DON’T FORGET
School will not be in session on Monday!
Teachers will be participating (and leading) a technology training at the High School

TIGER PRIDE ASSEMBLY
Our first Tiger Pride Assembly will be next Friday at 2:30 in the gym. After the assembly we will walk to the football field for our all school picture. Students will receive their new Tiger Pride T-Shirt at school on Friday morning. Please encourage your child to wear the shirt each Friday and show Tiger Pride!

VERY SPECIAL OPPORTUNITY
On Wednesday, Trudy's Kids, will be at Willard East. This is a traveling medical bus that will provide your children with any needed medical care FREE OF CHARGE. There is NO co-pay and you will not owe anything. There are no strings attached at all but you do have to fill out a form if you would like your child / children to be seen by the doctor and / or nurse. Please contact the office if you have questions! This is a great opportunity for our school.

Blessed!

Picture
On Wednesday night, my brother-in-law and sister-in-law welcomed a new addition to their family! Meet my new nephew, Alexander "Alex" Henry Kramer! I will have to wait until November to squeeze on this new little cutie (because they live in Iowa) but I had to have an "aunt" moment and show him off a little!

This week we focused on retelling stories with beginning, middle, and end AND writing stories with beginning, middle and an end. One of my favorite books to use for this is Caps for Sale. This week, we read the book on Tuesday and then the students wrote about his or her favorite part. Check out some great student work samples!
We also celebrated Grandparent's Day at Willard East. Grandparents and Honorary Grandparents were invited to eat lunch with their grandchild and even visit the Book Fair.

NEWS AND REMINDERS

SPELLING WORDS

MRS. KRAMER WILL BE ABSENT
I will be at a meeting for Common Core all day on Monday. Please send a note or call the office if your child will be going home a way other then normal.

WELCOME!
We have a new student in our classroom! Aidan joined our class today and we are excited to have him! Please make note of this addition as you plan for your child’s snack days. Also, I will be hosting a practicum student from Missouri State for the next 10 weeks. Miss Parks will be in our classroom on Tuesday mornings observing and working with the students.

DON'T FORGET... School will not be in session on Monday, September 24th. The teachers will be participating (and leading) professional development district-wide.

A POSITIVE NOTE
Our classroom had a visitor on Thursday. A principal from another elementary school popped in to see us using technology in our classroom. I could not have asked for better behaved students and they handled the surprise guest extremely well on super short notice!

Ask your student about…
Habitats,  writing stories with beginning, middle, and ends, the book fair, My Little Sister Ate One Hare, grandparent’s lunch and our new student!

BUSY FOUR DAYS!

9/7/2012

I MUST take a minute and brag on your children!!! Our ENTIRE class scored 100% on last Friday's spelling test! Nice job!!! We celebrated with some St. George's donuts on Tuesday (if you have never experienced these you should give them a try!) To top it all off, Principal Miller visited our room during our celebration, took our picture and hung it up on her Brag Board.
Then, on Wednesday, the class earned their 50th Tiger Token (ALREADY!!!) and celebrated with an extra recess. Students earn Tiger Tokens from special class teachers, other teachers, Principal Miller - pretty much any staff member. They are earned by displaying good hallway behavior, nice manners, great listening, hard work, or anything that a teacher sees fit. I can not believe that we are not even a month in to school and we have already reached 50!!! WOW!

  BOOK FAIR
The book fair will be open all of next week. Students will be allowed to go with a parent before / after school, with a grandparent or honorary grandparent on September 11th during our lunch time or during our regular library time on Wednesday. All students will visit the book fair as a class on Wednesday, so they will not return or check out
library books next week.

MRS. KRAMER WILL BE ABSENT
I will be at a district training at Willard Middle School on Wednesday afternoon. Monday,
September 17th I will be at a meeting for Common Core all day. Your students did a FANTASTIC job with the sub last week and that makes me feel so much better about being out of the classroom!

Ask your student about…
Living and non –living things, Sylvester and The Magic Pebble, story problems, earning extra recess, Read to Someone, visiting Mrs. Woodall, and writing with words and pictures.

Helper Schedule

Tues.– Jayme  Happy Birthday!
