It Feels Like Christmas!

The excitement is in the air for sure! It is so hard for me to believe that our time together in first grade is just about half way over! First semester went by quicker than ever (or at least for me it did!) We have been having so much fun this week and have enjoyed a ton of extra special activities. On Tuesday, the first graders spent the morning in the gym engaged in some holiday activities. That afternoon we had some guest readers from Willard Middle School. The middle school students wrote and illustrated their own books and then came to share them with us! It was a lot of fun.
Thursday we had so much fun at our Winter Party! We enjoyed some yummy food, made an adorable craft and even had a surprise visit from Santa! I would say he was the highlight of the party for sure!!! Thursday afternoon we enjoyed listening to Principal Miller read us some stories in the Tech Cafe!
Sadly, we had to say goodbye to one of our special friends today! Preston will be going to another Willard school when we return in January. So... we sent him off the only way we know how in Room 203 - with a huge group hug!.

FRIDAY NEWS!

WINTER PARTY
Our class party will be on Thursday from 9:00-10:00. We will be eating breakfast in our classroom.

 POLAR EXPRESS DAY
The first grade classes will be ending our week with a day of Polar Express and hot chocolate fun! Your student is invited to wear his or her pajamas to school Friday. Slippers are welcome but your student will need shoes as well.  Don’t forget that school will release at 12:30 on the 19th as well.

JANUARY READING CONTEST
I have challenged my students to a January Reading Contest. The student that brings in the most completed reading logs during the month of January will earn the lunch of their choice with me in the classroom. The student can pick between Taco Bell, Sonic, or Subway. Please keep in mind this is not the student that has the highest number overall (from the beginning of the year) but rather the student that brings in the most logs during January. A new log came home with your student today. You are welcome to write additional books on any type of paper, but please turn them in as increments of 10.  This will make it much easier to keep track of their running total. If your child prefers chapter books each chapter can be written down separately.
*** You can also find a copy of the reading log near the bottom of this post! Feel free to print it off to use if you would like.

You can also use this link to fill out a reading log and submit it directly to me online!!!
 Click{HERE} to try it out!

SPECIAL REQUEST
Your child will be bringing home a gift that he or she made for you. If you happen to have a small plastic container (butter / margarine, cool whip, cottage cheese, medium yogurt containers work great!) or a small shoe box that you could send, it would be greatly appreciated! This is especially important for bus riders and Tiger Tale students. Please send containers by Wednesday, December 17th if possible.

Guess Who's Back...Back Again...

A few years ago this little guy, Gilbert, joined my classroom. If you know the tradition of The Elf on the Shelf, you understand that he comes every year when the holiday season returns. Each day he hides in a new place and it is our job to find him and see what things he has been up to. Well... Gilbert has had a very busy first week in our classroom. He appeared on Monday with a special delivery (the book that explains his purpose) with directions to open at 9:00AM - of course we followed directions! He has also been caught snuggling out with The Grinch, hanging upside down from the ceiling, and fishing for goldfish crackers. We are tracking his every move by writing a book called The Elf Diaries (thanks to teacher blogger Cara at The First Grade Parade.) I wonder where we will find him next week?!?!

We had a little bit of our own fun this week in Room 203. On Thursday we wrote a "how to" piece about blowing bubbles. Of course, how would we be experts if we didn't try it out ourselves?!?! We had a lot of {tasty} fun with this project. After experimenting and writing our steps we did a cute little craft to go along with our piece.

We also started our economics unit this week! We learned all about good and services, earning, and saving money! We started earning tickets in class as part of our token economy system. Students can earn tickets for being at school on time, remembering to mark their lunch choice, wearing tennis shoes on PE days, and bringing back their library books. They can also earn tickets when they are caught being good!

NEWS

HOLIDAY STORE
Next week Willard East will be home to Jenny’s Penguin Patch, a holiday store. Our class will have time to shop on Tuesday morning from 10:30-11:00. An envelope and additional information came home on Wednesday. PLEASE fill out the envelope and include the money if you would like your child to shop on Tuesday. Gifts will range from .25 to $12.00 each but the majority of items are between $1 and $4.  The store will also be open on Thursday evening from 5:30-7:30 for family shopping time.

 CLASS STORE
This might get a little confusing! Each year the first grade students do an economics unit in December. Students have already been working hard to earn tickets in our classroom. We will have our OWN store on Thursday, December 18th and students will have the opportunity to purchase items with the tickets they have earned. The first grade classrooms are currently collecting items for our store. These do not have to be new!  Maybe you have a drawer full of happy meal type toys you would like to get rid of, or extra art supplies—this is the perfect time to donate those! We will happily use them as part of our class store. We have never had the Holiday Store at Willard East, so we are trying to make sure that all students understand the difference between it and our class store.

WINTER PARTY
Our class winter party will be on Thursday, December 18th at 9:00 AM. Students will enjoy breakfast so they do not need to eat prior to school on this day.

HOLIDAY FUN
On Tuesday, December 16th the first grade students will all meet the gym together for some holiday fun from 9:00-10:30AM.
