PENGUIN FUN!

This week we learned SO much about penguins! We started off the week making the K portion of our KWL chart. The K stands for what we already KNOW. On Tuesday we filled out the W portion of the chart. The W is what we WANT to know. All week we studied penguins (and enjoyed some penguin fiction, too) before filling out the L portion of our chart. This allowed us to share all that we had LEARNED this week. We had so much fun learning about these adorable birds! Ask your student to share some interesting penguin information with you this weekend!

Mrs. Whisler helped us make our adorable penguin KWL chart and as you can see, we learned A LOT!

If I Lived In A Snow Globe...

This was an adorable project that Mrs. Whisler found on Pinterest. Students were asked to write what they would do if they lived in a snow globe. These turned out SO cute and will be spending some time in our hallway before coming home!

Comparing Fiction and Non-Fiction Texts

Picture
Our penguin unit was a great way for us to spend some time looking at both fiction and non-fiction text and a variety of text features. Mrs. Whisler made this web with the students after reading several books together. We have spent a lot of time reading non-fiction books this year and I couldn't be more proud of how much growth the students have made this year. Some of the things they know and recognize are pretty impressive!

VALENTINE’S DAY
A class list and a separate note came home about the Valentine’s Day party. We will be eating pizza for lunch on the 14th. We are asking for a $3.00 donation to cover the cost of the pizza. Your child will not need a school or home lunch for this day.  Please send your child’s money by Wednesday, February 6th.

ROCKETMATH HOMEWORK
I am sending home a RocketMath packet with each student. All first graders need to be able to pass the Level L test by the end of the year. I know that several students will be far past that point and that is WONDERFUL! I am sending home one copy of each test for levels F-L. Please work on these addition skills with your child    verbally. In first grade, students get 3 minutes to practice orally reciting the equations around the outside and two minutes to complete the problems inside the box. Keep in mind every child has his or her own goal and your child should know their goal.  They only have to correctly answer that many equations.  You do not need to send anything back to school, I only ask that your child practice (beginning at his or her current level) for the next couple of weeks.
