Family Reading Night is Thursday, March 1st!
Backyard Burgers will be serving dinner in the gym from 5:30-6:30. I believe they will be serving hamburgers, hotdogs, chips, and drinks. From 6:00-7:30 there will be a variety of activities for you to do with your students. Each grade level will host an activity, many of which will be centered around Mr. Popper's Penguins.
Students are asked to bring a gently used book for the book swap that will take place in the Music Room. First grade will have our published books on display for families to read! Both our class and Miss Smith's class will be sharing our books during this time. I do have a little bit of sad news...
We found that the publisher made a few mistakes when printing the books. We have an extra page added and Miss Smith's class has a couple of pages printed out of order. The company was EXTREMELY apologetic and would like the chance to make things right. Therefore, I will NOT be sending the published books home just yet. Friday, after Family Reading Night, I will send ALL of our books back to Student Treasures where they will re-print our books and send them back to us. The company said that this should be a very quick process and we should have our books back very quickly.

READ-A-THON IS HERE!!!!
This year's read-a-thon packet will come home with your child today. A read-a-thon is similar to a walk-a-thon where students set goals to read for a set amount of time for one week. Our read-a-thon will run from FEBRUARY 21-MARCH1. Students will collect pledges from sponsors to encourage them to reach their goal. Our school goal is $3,000. We can easily meet this goal if every student collects $10 in pledges. There are different pledging options - you can make a "per page / minute" goal or a one-time donation. If a donor decides to make a one-time donation, they can pay now. However, students have until March 2 to collect "per page/ minute" donations. WHEN we reach our goal Coach J and Mr. Morton will wear dresses for the entire day. The classroom at each grade level that raises the most money will get to do their make-up!
Look for more information in your child's backpack today!

DUCK ON A TRACTOR...

On Tuesday we read the book Duck on a Bike by David Shannon. Originally the purpose of the lesson was to focus on the variety of punctuation that the author uses in the book. However, my firsties latched on to the ending of the book - making incredible inferences and I just couldn't pass up the "teachable moment." We still spent a significant amount of time talking about conventions but we spent the next few days publishing these gems during Work on Writing time.

Biography Study

2/14/2012

We spent last week reading a variety of biographies about various famous people in U.S. history. My students were fascinated to learn that George Washing Carver found over 300 uses for peanuts. They fell in love with stories of George Washington and were inspired by Abraham Lincoln. I was so pleased to see many of my students select books on these three individuals as well as other biographies during library!
Here are some things that we were working on last week...
Picture
The students learned that Abe Lincoln kept important papers in his hat. The students wrote about what they would keep if they had Abe's hat - and of course, put their writing inside the hat!
