The students spent some time during open computer lab researching oviparous animals as the beginning of a group project. Each student was assigned an animal and a specific concept to research. For example, some students are in charge of learning about the animal's habitat, or what they eat, or what their body looks like. Next, they will teach their group members all about their area of expertise! The students will work with their group to create a poster about their animal. Finally, the students will share their poster with the class. Students may even have the opportunity to teach the other first grade classes about their animal. Each of the classes picked different oviparous animals so by the end of the school year we will know A LOT about these egg laying creatures!

HOMEWORK FOR READING ASSESSMENT
As we approach the end of the school year we also approach a time of assessment for all learners. I will start giving the end of the year reading assessment (DRA) within the next week or two. As you read with your child I encourage you to let them practice retelling the story and identify the main events, their favorite part, and tell why they liked that specific part. Practicing these things can make a huge difference by easing your child’s nerves and making them more comfortable during the assessment.
GOOD BYE MRS. WHISLER
Mrs. Whisler will return to our classroom next week for one final week of instruction before going to her long-term sub position at Willard North. Since we cannot predict exactly what day she will start that position, we will be proactive and celebrate with Mrs. Whisler on FRIDAY, MAY 3rd. Your child is welcome to bring Mrs. Whisler a card or token of appreciation as we help her plan for her job as a 2nd grade teacher at Willard East next year!
WALKING FIELD TRIP
We will be walking to Willard High School on Thursday to see a play. We will leave East at 9:00 and return around 10:20. Please make sure your child has tennis shoes and a jacket if it is cold that morning.
