Happy Valentine's Day... and Friday the 13th!

This week we spent some time learning all about Abe Lincoln. Did you know that he was the tallest President? Or that he only grew his beard after a young girl wrote him a letter and told him that she thought he would look better with one? I must say, most of the students were quite impressed with the lifestyle of Mr. Lincoln. We also spent some time reflecting on our own talents and recognizing what our strengths are. It was great hearing the students share about themselves! I sure have a talented group of sweet and helpful students this year!!!
NO SCHOOL ON MONDAY
Just a reminder, school will not be is session for students on Monday!

FAMILY READING NIGHT
Be sure to mark your calendars for our Willard East Family Reading Night on Thursday, March 5th!!!
We will be celebrating literacy Willy Wonka style! There will be a couple of food trucks on hand for your convenience but feel free to eat before / after or even bring your own dinner! Each grade level will be hosting a school-wide activity. The first grade classrooms will be in charge of the “Candy Walk” (think cake walk…) and are collecting candy donations for the event.
What we need:
Bags of bite size / small, individually wrapped candy. If your family (or business) is able to help us with this need, we would greatly appreciate it!

SPRING CONFERENCES

You will also be able to sign up for a spring conference at Family Reading Night! I would love to see each family and update you on your child’s progress! Spring conference will be held the last week in March.
This will be a much more casual setting than our fall conferences, but I will be offering some additional times if you prefer a more traditional conference.

ANOTHER SHORT WEEK...

This winter has been BRUTAL! I don't know about you, but I am very ready for some sunshine and warmer weather. Keeping my fingers crossed that we can get a full week of school in next week!

This week was packed full because we tried hard to squeeze as much as possible into the three days that we had together. I am very sad that we missed Digital Learning Day on Wednesday. We were supposed to Skype with my dentist, Dr. Tyler Buzbee, at Buzbee Dental. He was going to show us around an exam room, introduce us to some of the tools he uses, tell us what a visit would look like and of course answer any questions that we still had for him. Isn't it amazing that we could do all of that while sitting in our classroom?!?! Technology is wonderful! Dr. Tyler and I will try to reschedule our Skype session for another day sometime in the future.

Not only did we learn about dental health this week but we also spent some time getting to know our 16th President, Abraham Lincoln. We learned about how President Lincoln was a lawyer and also how he kept important papers in his hat so he did not lose them. Check out these super cute Abe Lincoln's hat activities that we did!

VALENTINE’S DAY
First… thank you SO much to everyone who signed up to help bring supplies for our special snack! I was so surprised to see everything spoken for when I check to see what was left!
Reminders… All students will need to bring something to hold all of the cards they receive. This can be a traditional Valentine’s box, a basket, gift bag—really anything that will hold 22+ cards and candy! Remember, it is very helpful if the cards that your child plans to pass out are in a separate ziplock bag or large envelope.

Ask your child about…contractions, caring for our teeth, Abraham Lincoln, and our money wars!

First Grade Rocks!!!

Picture
This week we learned about biographies! We started the week by learning about George Washington Carver. We learned all about how he earned the nickname of "The Plant Doctor" and also how he studied peanuts. We learned about Abe Lincoln or "Honest Abe"  and George Washington. We wrapped up our study on biographies by interviewing a classmate and writing a biography about his or her life! We are becoming SUCH amazing writers!!!

Make sure to check out the newest addition to our class blog: Mrs. Whisler's Week. You will find her tab at the top of the page. Each week, Mrs. Whisler will make a blog post about the exciting things that she is doing with your kids! On her page you will find more pictures and videos of your little first grade smarty!

Don’t forget that your child will not need a school or home lunch on Thursday. We will be eating   pizza during our Valentine’s Day party. Our party will begin at 11:00 and will conclude around 11:30, when our class goes to recess. Students will pass out their cards prior to the party but will have the opportunity to open their cards after eating. All students will need a box or a bag to hold the cards that they receive from other students.

DON’T FORGET
School will not be in session on Friday, February 15th or Monday, February 18th!

Biography Study

2/14/2012

We spent last week reading a variety of biographies about various famous people in U.S. history. My students were fascinated to learn that George Washing Carver found over 300 uses for peanuts. They fell in love with stories of George Washington and were inspired by Abraham Lincoln. I was so pleased to see many of my students select books on these three individuals as well as other biographies during library!
Here are some things that we were working on last week...
Picture
The students learned that Abe Lincoln kept important papers in his hat. The students wrote about what they would keep if they had Abe's hat - and of course, put their writing inside the hat!

...keep candy in my hat because I could have candy anytime.
