PictureJust a little peer editing to make our stories stronger!
This week we spent a lot of time working with buddies! My students absolutely loved the time they had to work with a friend. We spent some quality time working on our character series books with a buddy. This allowed us to read our story out loud, checking to make sure the story read smoothly. Our buddies also asked us questions about our stories and helped us add important details to make our stories stronger.

In reading, we read to a friend and worked on our fluency and expression. We got to use my favorite series, the Piggie and Gerald books by Mo Willems, to practice. We had so much fun doing this! I LOVE it when laughter fills my classroom!!!

AND... let's not forget about our new favorite Friday tradition: reading buddy time with Mrs. Hillenburg's third grade class! We look forward to this time every week. Why didn't we start this earlier in the year?!?!?

Thank you so much to everyone that was able to join us for our Spring Concert. I think the students did a GREAT job!!! It was fun to see Mr. Heller, Mr. Morton, Dr. Medlin, and Coach J as the Village People!

WALKING FIELD TRIP
The first grade students will be walking to Zott’s on Thursday, May 1st. We will be leaving the school shortly before 2:00 and will return around 3:15. The cost will be $1.00, which will get your child a tasty treat! Please see the  permission slip that came home attached to the newsletter.

MAP TESTING
Our 3rd and 4th grade students will be taking the MAP test next week on Tuesday, Wednesday, and Thursday and the following week on Tuesday and Wednesday. This does change our schedule. We will have special classes in the morning instead of the afternoon. To help break our day up, we have some special activities planned for the first graders. Each first grade teacher will be doing a different science experiment involving ice cream. The students will rotate to a different teacher each day until they complete all three science experiments. The second week we will be doing the same type of rotation, only we will be reading books and completing a craft or activity to go with each book.

MATH
WOW!!! As a class, we did FANTASTIC on the Unit 7 test! The students worked so hard and it really paid off! Now we will move on to our standard and non-standard measurement unit. This unit is a lot of fun and the kids always love the activities that go along with it.

KINDERGARTEN SCREENING
Do you have a child (or know a child) that will start kindergarten next year? The office is now accepting
appointments for kindergarten screening! Call Angie at 417-742-4639 to set up a time!

We have been working so hard this week!

Picture
This week we continued to become better writers by focusing on voice and word choice. We read a lot of great books this week and my students have become OBSESSED with Mo Willems. The obsession has been brewing all year but it is in full force now! We have been reading as many Mo Willems books as we can get our hands on and every day we love him more. If you aren't familiar with him, I highly recommend checking him out. I have to admit, I just ordered four more of his books for our classroom.
Picture
We spent a lot of time in Cara Carroll's I Scream, You Scream, We All Scream for Ice Cream unit. We wrote ice cream similies, invented our own new ice cream flavor, and wrote narrative stories about what we would do if we were Ice Cream King or Queen. And... what better way to wrap up the week than by eating a little bit of the tasty inspiration?!?!?
SPELLING
sick, trick, brick, truck, duck, slicker

MUSIC PERFORMANCE
Please join us next Friday night for the Willard East Spring Music Performance. Each grade level will be performing in this Broadway themed show. The show will be at Willard High School and will start at 7:00PM in the gym. Students should arrive at 6:45 and look for me. Your child will sit with me and Mrs. Whisler on the bleacher side of the gym. Parents, friends, and family members will sit on the chair-back side of the gym. I will be leaving a little early but Mrs. Whisler will be sitting with the class and you will pick your student up from her. All students need to wear their Friday shirt for this concert. If you cannot locate the shirt, please dress your child in jeans and a black shirt.

COSTUMES FOR COMMUNITY

Next Friday is also our April Costumes for Community day. The theme will be to dress like your favorite teacher.

SUBTRACTION FLUENCY
We have been practicing subtraction for the past couple of weeks and next week we will begin subtraction timed tests.  We will be using the subtraction Rocketmath pages but each child will have four minutes to complete the page. We will also continue doing our regular addition Rocketmath as well.

Ask your child about… the water cycle, being Ice Cream King / Queen, the flavor of ice cream they would invent, Futaba (new iPad app), and playing Boggle.
